A collaboration between the City of Phoenix, Arizona State University School of Architecture, the Seventh Avenue Merchants Association and the Melrose Neighborhood to create a demonstration streetscape along Seventh Avenue between Indian School Road and Camelback Road offers an exciting opportunity for temporary public art displays. New pedestrian and bicyclist amenities along the route feature signature shade structures with large panels which create an ongoing public art project. Each panel will display a two-dimensional reproduction of an original work for six months to one year and will then be replaced by new work, creating a permanent outdoor exhibit space for the community and Arizona artists.
Quetzal Guerrero, Elizabeth Pfeiffer and Erin Sotak, all new to public art, were selected to create the first artwork for these panels. Guerrero’s acrylic paintings, Pfeiffer’s watercolor paintings, and Sotak’s photographs of her installation works were reproduced on large translucent backlit panels and unveiled at the dedication of the new streetscape on May 7 in conjunction with Artlink, Inc.’s monthly First Fridays artwalk.
