SOCIAL WORKERSWhat are School Safety Teams?
The School Safety Teams represent a unique partnership between school officials, police, juvenile probation and social workers. They were formed to actively deter risk behaviors and build positive relationships with adult role models. Through the Team efforts, young people are provided the opportunity to lead productive lives free from crime and violence.The Teams collaborate with the school administration, teachers, students and families. They get involved with school functions and teach Law Related Education, a specified program teaching children fundamentals of the law and how the Justice System operates. The Teams strive to build lasting relationships with the youth they serve.
Team Member Roles:
School Resource Officer (SRO)
The SRO's participate in many programs that require devotion, commitment and the desire to help today's youth. They maintain safety on school campuses through the following activities:
- Establish and maintain a professional working relationship with school officials, students and families
- Provide appropriate police/enforcement services at assigned schools
- Investigate all crime on campus
- Provide instruction in Law Related Education
- Keep school campuses crime and drug free
- Refer students and families to social services
School Probation Officer (SPO)
SPO's build positive relationships with students by providing them with a positive role model and mentor. Their activities include:
- Work as community and court liaison
- Work directly with police officers and social workers
- Provide information on the court process
- Teach Law Related Education
- Collaborate with Teen Court and the Court Unified Truancy Suppression, two school based programs
- Facilitate groups on anger management, tobacco education, substance abuse prevention, self-esteem, violence reduction, gangs and parenting classes
School Based Social Workers
The School Based Social Worker addresses the underlying problems youth face and link students and their families with social services. They provide the following assistance:
- Crisis intervention, assessment and referral services to Behavioral Health Agencies
- Case management
- Short term individual, family and group counseling
- Mediation services
- Social service referrals for school-age youth and their families
- Prevention and intervention programs
