Materials will be direct hauled from a resident's home to a recycling facility (scrap metal dealer) or to another facility for proper removal of regulated materials, such as refrigerants. After removal of refrigerants, recyclable materials will be taken to a scrap metal dealer.

Any revenues from the sale of the scrap materials will be deposited in the Solid Waste Fund and used to offset disposal and other collection costs.

History

The City of Phoenix has been providing an appliance/electronics collection program since 2001 following the awarding of an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Waste Reduction Assistance Grant. This funding was used for the purchase of two vehicles and equipment for the collection and ultimate recycling of appliances/electronics from Phoenix residents. The goal of the Appliance/Electronics Collection and Recycling program is to take tons of reusable and recyclable appliances and electronics out of the solid waste stream of the city of Phoenix and provide the materials for reuse or for recycling.

Why does Phoenix use this program? Here a few of the reasons:

Extracting regulated waste (refrigerants) from appliances that use them and keeping them from escaping into the atmosphere.
Recycling of materials.
Diverting material from bulk trash routes and trucks (saving space in trucks to make collection more efficient).
Diverting of materials from city landfills (saving disposal space).
Receiving revenue from recycled appliances.
Providing materials for electronics/computer recycling industry.
