AIRFIELD MAINTENANCE WORKER II

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform construction, maintenance, and repair of airfield areas. Work includes performing preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and directing the work of Airfield Maintenance Workers I and Semiskilled Workers. An Airfield Maintenance Worker II is distinguished from an Airfield Maintenance Worker I by the assignment of more technical tasks, the responsibility for directing the work of others, and the greater independence in which work is performed. Work in process and upon completion is normally supervised and inspected by an Aviation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs radio control function for coordinating various airfield repair tasks;
- Sets up barricades and other warning devices to channel traffic around maintenance areas or other hazards;
- Operates mobile equipment such as trucks, rollers and related airfield maintenance equipment;
- Escorts non-authorized vehicles into restricted airport areas.
- Installs and repairs security fencing on airfield grounds;
- Performs asphalt construction and repair including the use of all related equipment and tools;
- Performs construction and repair of concrete including the use of all related equipment and tools;
- Operates the walk behind paint striper and other small paint striping and paint removal equipment;
- Operates a small mechanical and a hand-held herbicide applicator;
- Installs and repairs small signage;
- Installs safety curb blocks and pavement reflectors;
- Operates a 200 gallon tanker for herbicide application and dust control;
- Performs preventative maintenance tasks, such as making simple adjustments, replacing minor parts, and lubricating equipment, in order to keep equipment in proper operating condition;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Methods and practices used in the maintenance and/or expansion of airport facilities.
- Equipment, materials, and tools used in one or more of the construction trades.
- Security fence installation and repair.
- F.A.A. and Aviation Department rules and regulations as applied to airfield maintenance activities.
- City of Phoenix traffic rules and regulations.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Communicate orally in the English language with individuals in a face-to-face one-on-one setting, or by phone or two way radio.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.

- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
- Climb ladders and steps.
- Lift arms above shoulder level.
- Set up or remove barricades for special maintenance events.
- Move objects weighing 50 pounds short and long distances.
- Work in a variety of weather and environmental conditions with exposure to the elements, dust, and extreme heat and cold temperatures.
- Work with cleaning fluid, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment to maintain airfield grounds.
- Use and interpret graphic instructions, such as blueprints, schematic drawings, and penciled layouts to perform maintenance or special projects.
- Travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Operate power driven machinery such as a jack hammer, tamper, and other similar sized equipment.
Additional Requirements:
- This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, some positions may require individuals to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL). Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
- Some positions require an herbicide applicator's license.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work involving concrete and asphalt work with at least six months experience in an airfield environment. Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
