PRODUCTION COORDINATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform technical work in the design, installation, and maintenance of sophisticated stage lighting, sound, projection, rigging, and related systems required to meet client needs for stage productions and other activities at the Phoenix Convention Center and venues. Responsibilities include supervising contract personnel assisting in the staging and operation of events. This classification works under the general supervision of the Production Services Manager and uses independent judgment and discretion in technical matters. When assigned, this classification performs the responsibilities of the Production Services Manager during his or her absence.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Evaluates and recommends stage lighting placement and sound setups and acts as on-site supervisor for stagehands and other support personnel during event setup and performances;
- Trains and supervises stagehands and other support personnel in the operation of theatrical equipment and related systems, and maintains strict safety standards;
- Integrates touring company electrical equipment, sound equipment, and stage setup with house systems as required;
- Makes frequent checks of equipment and performs preventive maintenance and emergency repair on electrical and mechanical stage systems including consoles, spotlights, electronic dimmers, closed circuit television, recording equipment, and related devices;
- Installs systems and equipment related to the Convention Center and Venues as designed, engineered, or approved by the Production Services Manager;
- Recommends modifications or replacement of equipment to improve operations;
- Keeps accurate records of electronic systems' performance, equipment inventories, and work accomplished;
- Arranges for receipt and storage of advance show materials and operational supplies;
- Works with clients and other staff to plan and coordinate events;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Principles and practices of supervision.
- Computerized stage lighting and complex sound operations as conducted in a large public assembly facility designed for multipurpose uses.
- Procedures and techniques required for the installation and maintenance of stage lighting, electronic sound system equipment, and mechanical and motorized rigging.
- Electrical and mechanical equipment including tools, test devices, and safety methods associated with such equipment.
The use of tools and diagnostic equipment used in maintaining electrical and mechanical systems.
Ability to:

- Make fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism, such as operating a joy stick or levers.
- Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects, such as assembling screws, washers, collar units and inserting them in a small hole.
- Lift arm above shoulder level, such as working with suspended sound or lighting equipment.
- Work in small, cramped areas.
- Climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
- Use a catwalk in the performance of duties.
- Work at heights greater than 10 feet.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less), and move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).

- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.

Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require working irregular hours, evenings, and weekends.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and operation of electronic sound systems, stage rigging systems, and stage lighting equipment in a convention center, theater or other large public assembly facility, supplemented by college level courses in electronics or communications engineering. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
