The fundamental reason this classification exists is to learn the skills required to perform street and storm sewer maintenance and the operation of large and small vehicles and power equipment by participating in City education and training programs as well as in on-the-job training. Incumbents assist with a variety of tasks involved in the maintenance, repair, and inspection of the City's streets and storm sewer system with guidance and direction from a Street Maintenance Worker, under the general supervision of a Street Maintenance Foreman. Assigned duties increase in scope and difficulty as the Street Maintenance Worker Trainee demonstrates the ability to perform such duties. Successful completion of the twelve month training program results in appointment to the Street Maintenance Worker I classification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Learns and performs with increasing independence, Street Maintenance Worker I duties;
- Sets up and picks up barricades, lane cones, and warning signs to channel traffic around work crews;
- Rakes and tamps asphalt and spreads aggregate on street repair projects;
- Operates jackhammers, and pneumatic compacting equipment;
- Operates 4-yard or 6-yard dump truck, asphalt paving truck and trailer, and an asphalt roller;
- Cleans drainage ditches and storm drainpipes;
- Drives truck when traveling to, from and between jobs;
- Operates vibratory rollers, air compressors, hydraulic tools and other similarly sized maintenance equipment;
- Digs up ground for ditches, sign posts, etc., using a pick, shovel, spade or other hand tool;
- Operates and maintains a crack seal kettle and emulsion spray wand.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Move debris, dirt, or other material from one place to another using a shovel, rake, or other tool.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Communicate orally in the English language with other city employees in face-to-face, one-on-one settings.
- Understand and comply with simple English written and oral instructions.
- Understand simple road maps.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (less than 20 feet).
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously.
- Lift arms above shoulder level to place crack seal material into kettle.
- Operate power driven machinery such as jack hammer, tamper, or other equally sized equipment to repair city streets.
- Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
- Work with and around chemicals, gases, and other toxic or dangerous substances using only normal protective equipment.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift. This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to pass an Arizona Department of transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Demonstrated ability to do maintenance work as shown by prior experience and training or through examination. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
