A few antique postcards from around the turn of the century, pictured here, celebrate the days when the Salt River was … a river. The presence of water allowed a variety of vegetation to flourish on the riverbanks, a stark contrast to the bleached, rocky bed of today's Salt River. Paradoxically, postcards of the era also celebrated the construction of the Granite Reef dam, which helped stem the flow of water through the riverbed, permanently changing the nature of the Salt River.
