Educational Fair A Success

The first annual Rio Salado Community Fair & Bike Ride was a success. Held on Saturday, October 27, 2001, more than 350 people visited the river fair. Some participated in a two-mile bike ride, while others did the 12-mile ride to South Mountain Park.

Twenty environmental groups demonstrated their programs, and many gave away items such as tree seedlings, water bottles and stickers. “The highlight of the fair was having members of the community plant the first mesquite trees in the Rio Salado Project,” said Karen Dada, Rio Salado Habitat Manager.

Kids had plenty to keep them occupied at the Fair. In addition to coloring, youths that attended the fair helped to plant their share of trees, got their faces painted and saw some real, live native Arizona wildlife.

Walt Kinsler, left, and Rio Salado Citizens Advisory Committee Chairman George Young pat down dirt around one of the 40 young mesquite trees planted on October 27, while ASU Professor Dr. Robert Ohmart, standing center, looks on.
