Project Details
This project benefitted from robust public engagement and the final design of the roadway and safety improvements were adjusted or augmented based on community input. The design is fully complete and construction began in July 2025. Features include:
- Adjusting lane widths to increase safety for people bicycling and to moderate speeds
- Widening sidewalks for pedestrian safety
- Reconfiguring dedicated bike lanes
- Adding street lights for increased safety and visibility
- Increasing the landscape elements along the corridor
Construction of State Route 51 resulted in a corresponding decrease in traffic volume along this portion of 32nd Street. This allowed the city to study ways to enhance the safety of the road, while contributing to a more vibrant community along the North 32nd Street Corridor.
Constraints such as overhead power lines on the western side, existing water and sewer lines, high pressure gas lines and other infrastructure influenced the design options for this area. The detailed design diagram linked below shows all of the areas of improvement.
The City's Office of Arts and Culture selected Arizona artist and sculptor, Bobby Zokaites, to work with the community on public art concepts and designs to enhance the streetscape. He is working on six separate artistic elements, including a shade structure, that will be installed between Cheryl Drive and Cholla Street.
