A traffic safety public information program
sponsored by the City of Phoenix
and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
The Problem
- Everyday, thousands of motorists run red lights in Phoenix. With more than 890 traffic signals in the city, this creates a serious problem.
- When traffic laws are disobeyed, drivers endanger themselves and others.
- Crashes often occur when drivers speed up to "beat the light," instead of slowing in anticipation of the change to RED.
The Consequences
- Each year, more than 3,400 people are injured in Phoenix due to running red lights, most of them seriously. About 25 persons are killed.
- Phoenix Police issue about 9,700 citations each year for running red lights. Cited drivers may be fined $175 or more and get two points on their driving record.
- More than 6,500 vehicles are damaged each year in Phoenix due to red-light running.
- Running red lights costs Phoenix an estimated $345 million each year. It costs the nation $7 billion each year, and we all pay for it in higher medical bills, insurance and taxes.
The Answer: Drive Defensively At All Times!
Beware of the dangers of motorists running red lights every time you approach an intersection. Be careful as you drive through the intersection, even when the light is green.
Intersection - the grey area within the lines extending from curb line to curb line. Vehicle A - waiting to make a left turn, may complete the turn on red if in the intersection before the signal turns red.
Vehicles B and C - are not in the intersection and may not proceed on red.
The Law
From the Arizona Revised Statutes Section 28-645:Steady Yellow Indication
"Vehicular traffic facing a steady yellow signal is thereby warned that the related green movement is being terminated or that a red indication will be exhibited immediately thereafter when vehicular traffic shall not enter the intersection."
Red Indication
"Vehicular traffic facing a steady red signal alone shall stop before entering the intersection and shall remain standing until an indication to proceed is shown... " (except legal turns on red).
