The city of Phoenix Water Services Department consistently provides a reliable tap water supply that meets or surpasses all standards for health and safety for 1.5 million customers at a lower cost than most of the country’s largest cities. Phoenix’s water supply is stable and comes from multiple sources, with more than 90 percent being surface water starting as snow and traveling down the Salt, Verde and Colorado Rivers. A small percentage is from groundwater or wells. All of Phoenix’s water is treated at one of six water treatment plants before traveling through 7,000 miles of distribution lines to customers’ taps.
Phoenix Water Services also maintains 5,000 miles of sewer lines. Three wastewater treatment plants serve 2.5 million customers in several local cities. Wastewater is treated and then used again for crops, environmental wetlands and to assist with energy production.
The Water Services Department, which is more than 100 years old, is comprised of approximately 1,500 employees including engineers, technicians, field service representatives and office staff. The employees provide services to customers within a 540-square mile service area. More than 5 million tests and measurements are conducted each year to comply with strict regulatory standards created by the Environmental Protection Agency. The department is fee-driven and thereby self-supporting.
