Councilman Tom Simplot
June 2008
Summer is here and there’s plenty heating up in central Phoenix. Here are a few things to watch for in the coming months:
Reversible lanes
The traffic study by the ASU Phoenix Urban Research Laboratory and the city’s Street Transportation Department exploring the use of reversible lanes is about complete and ready to be presented to the City Council. The study will examine traffic information as well as consider the “people factor” – neighbors and businesses along Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street and how they feel about these lanes. Do you think they are still beneficial or have they become obsolete? If you’d like to comment, send me a note by e-mail at council.district.4@phoenix.gov or call my office at 602-262-7447.
METRO Light Rail
Very soon now, trains will be traveling along the 20-mile segment of rail as they are tested to meet safety and performance guidelines. Keep your eyes out for trains on 19th Avenue, Camelback Road, Central Avenue, and downtown on Washington and Jefferson streets. As drivers and pedestrians, we need to use caution while maneuvering the streets we share with the METRO line. Even though the system is designed to help ensure safety during testing and operations, it is our own driver and pedestrian behavior that will make the greatest difference. Please use caution when driving near the train tracks and be sure to make your children aware of crossing streets properly at designated crosswalks.
District 4 Town Hall Meeting, June 17
Save the date! Don’t miss the next District 4 Town Hall meeting on the evening of Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Community Church of Hope, 4121 N. Seventh Ave., just north of Indian School Road. (Parking is accessible through Sixth Avenue.). I hope you will join your neighbors, city staff and me as we discuss issues affecting our District 4 neighborhoods and the entire city. For more information, please call my office.
Moonlight Movies in the Park, June 7
And finally, don’t miss our summer Moonlight Movie in the Park on June 7. Our featured film will be “Ever After” with Drew Barrymore. It’s a new take on the classic Cinderella fairy tale and a film the entire family will enjoy. Pack a blanket, some snacks and bring family and friends to a free evening in the park. I hope to see you there!
