Achievement

DOUGHERTY FOUNDATION & SOUTH MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The Dougherty Foundation and South Mountain Community College have collaborated on the ACE (Achieving a College Education) Program to recruit "at-risk" students to enable them to graduate from high school and college. Students attend high school during the week and college on Saturday and one weeknight. The program includes a job component to assist students with obtaining part-time employment and a parent component to provide parents the opportunity to learn more about post-secondary education and what their student will experience as they enter college.

Innovation

HONEYWELL COMMERCIAL FLIGHT SYSTEMS & METRO TECH VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE

Students in the Industrial Electronics program are given the opportunity to receive specialized training leading to employment in the electronics manufacturing industry. Honeywell provides financial support, technical expertise, and supplies and materials so that students can be trained in a production environment. A retired Honeywell supervisor has been retained to provide the students with specific instruction in handsoldering and assembly, as well as assisting students in making a successful transition from school to workplace. Honeywell has created a number of cooperative work experiences in their Avionics Division facility.

Leadership - Corporation

AMERICAN EXPRESS COMPANY & VARIOUS SCHOOLS

The American Express/Arizona School To Work Partnership (a regional branch of Jobs For America's Graduates) motivates students who are disadvantaged or at risk of dropping out to stay in school, while giving them valuable training, work force preparation, and a more positive outlook on education. The program involves classroom workshops and practical experiences that expose students to various industries, helping them develop skills necessary to achieve employment upon graduation. The program involves intensive one-on-one attention and work throughout the senior year. As a result, the students gain self confidence, knowledge and a brighter employment future. All graduates are assisted for nine months after graduation with continuing help in job placement and employment guidance, so they may find quality jobs.

Public Agencies/Community-Based Organizations

CENTER AGAINST SEXUAL ABUSE & OSBORN SCHOOL DISTRICT

Elementary school teachers are spending an increasing amount of time attending to students' disruptive behavior in the classroom and interpersonal conflicts on the playground. Although they are expected to concentrate on teaching academics, teachers are finding that student behavior prevents them from doing so. Behavioral problems in school age children approximates 25% of a school teacher's time (Cowen, et al, 1975). The American Express and Wallace foundations have joined with the Center Against Sexual Abuse and Osborn School District in a unique community partnership to provide violence prevention for school aged children and to stop this cycle of violence from continuing.

Small Business

SUNVEK, INC. & SANDPIPER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Sunvek is in its second year of sponsoring Sandpiper's FAMILY LEARNING program. Family Learning Trunks are individual "learning packages" of games, books, videos, etc. on grade level topics which go home with interested families for a week during the school year. Family Learning Nights is a series of parent-child evenings where active and cooperative learning is shared on topics such as Math/Science, Language/Literature, Teamwork and Recreation. Sandpiper and Sunvek believe that the "circle of learning" is closed when the school, family and community are involved.

Reading

CITIBANK OF ARIZONA PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION & VARIOUS SCHOOLS

In 1991, Citibank pledged a $300,000 grant over three years to support and expand the Literacy Initiative. The program was renamed "Plant the Seed. Learn to Read." The grant's key elements include making literacy a top priority among schools and teachers, incorporating reading and writing across curriculum, increasing the frequency of factual and creative student writing and involving parents in literacy activities.

Special Recognition

RJR NABISCO & MOON VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL

RJR Nabisco has invested substantial funding to launch systematic restructuring at the local level. A panel of national leaders screened and selected the schools Nabisco would form partnerships with based on dramatic but attainable school restructuring of goals. The Moon Valley/RJR Nabisco Partnership is creating a new flexible year-round system of education specifically designed to help make all students successful. This new system is integrating an outcome-based approach with components which include flexible scheduling, interdisciplinary studies, dual transcripts reflecting information in which the student has demonstrated competence, increased use of technology, development of software to compliment core curriculum and greater student and parental input in designing student educational plans. In addition, extended day classes will help freshman and sophomores who need additional time to complete core curriculum requirements.
