Innovation

CIRCLE K CORPORATION & MANZANITA SCHOOL

On January 14, 1993, Manzanita School and the Circle K Corporation entered into a partnership by jointly opening a Circle K Learning Center on the Manzanita campus. This Learning Center is a "mini" store which features many of the standard merchandising elements of a real Circle K store including a check-out counter with cash registers, uniforms, product displays and fast food offerings. This Learning Center provides students with a unique real-life retail setting through which they can apply valuable basic skills in mathematics, budgeting, reading, art, nutrition and social behavior.

Small Business

CORESLAB STRUCTURES, INC. & LAVEEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT

The partnership is advantageous to both parties: The schools receive resources in the form of time, money and ideas; Coreslab Structures received enhanced public image and the opportunity to share thoughts, ideas and knowledge with young people who will become the business leaders of the future.

Leadership

INTEL CORPORATION & PALMDALE TRADITIONAL SCHOOL

Under the old paradigm, "...businesses were sometimes welcome to "adopt" a school; but were kept at arm's length..." under the new paradigm… "businesses are invited to become partners in the students continuous progress" (John Jay Banstigl) This new paradigm reflects the current thinking behind the Palmdale/Intel Partnership. Palmdale Trad. School, having been adopted by Intel in 1989 is now in full partnership with the Corporation.

Non-Profit Agency

THE CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION & CARL HAYDEN HIGH SCHOOL

At Carl Hayden High School, Mr. Kino Flores, principal, has exemplified his faith in his faculty and staff. They have defined the projects deemed important to the school's restructuring including: a core interdisciplinary curriculum; reading, writing and speaking across the curriculum; a home base for all students; a math learning center; technology across the curriculum and both an alternative school and a night school. There have been noted progress in reading, writing and math. Dropouts and tardies are down. Dr. Paul Lansing and Dr. Ardeth Cropper from the Center for Excellence in Education at NAU have provided much of the training for this successful project. The vehicle for this restructuring has been a Professional Growth Model developed by Dr. Lansing.
