Mentoring

PHELPS DODGE CORPORATION & WASHINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT, MURPHY SCHOOL DISTRICT & ST GREGORY'S SCHOOL

The Intergenerational Tutoring Program, developed and implemented by the OASIS (Older Adult Service and Information Systems) Institute in partnership with Phelps Dodge Corporation, promotes literacy, success in learning and self-esteem, mobilizing a largely untapped resource--older adults--to mentor at-risk children in grades K-3, a critical time to build a foundation for success in school. Through stable, one-on-one relationships, OASIS volunteers build children's self-esteem, and foster a love of reading and learning. This unique and innovative partnership provides mentoring/tutoring to more that 300 at-risk, K-3rd grade students each week during the school year. In 1990, with a pilot grant from Phelps Dodge Corporation, the OASIS Institute implemented this Program in partnership with the Jack L. Kuban Elementary School in the Murphy Elementary School District. Seven years later, the partnership has grown to include the Arthur M. Hamilton School (in the Murphy District), 10 schools in the Washington Elementary School District, and more than 2,000 volunteers, providing critical mentor relationships to more than 2,750 young students each year.

Youth Development

PLANNED PARENTHOOD & ALL SCHOOLS WITHIN THE PHOENIX CITY LIMITS

The Positive Force Players are an extraordinary group of young people dedicated to the task of bringing peer education to teens in Phoenix and throughout Arizona through the powerful medium of live theatre. As a peer-education program, Positive Force Players believes that students listen most intently to each other. In a time when gang violence, drug use, weapons in schools and teen pregnancy confront young people in every community, the Players stand out as exceptional examples of teens taking a creative, dynamic approach to community service.

A Health Start

PRICE COSTCO & TOLLESON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Costco Wholesale Corporation and the Tolleson (K-8) Elementary School are in unique partnership that promotes the well-being of it's children by providing the opportunity for a positive school atmosphere. Learning is celebrated prior to the beginning of the new academic year; and sustained learning is also acknowledged and celebrated throughout the year with award assemblies. In July of 1997, the week-end before the beginning of the new school year, the Tolleson community attended its First Annual BACK-TO-SCHOOL-GALA. The Costco manager of Depot 936 and some of its staff distributed 600 beautiful backpacks filled with school supplies as they warmly wished our students a great school year. The children and their families enjoyed music, food, met their new teachers and checked out their newly assigned classrooms! Afterwards, throughout the school year, students enjoyed the fun, food and recognition of their accomplishments, courtesy of our Costco partner.

A Marketable Skill

BANK OF AMERICA & CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

Bank of America's comprehensive partnership with Central High School is now in its fifth year. The commitment, from the beginning, of both the school and the bank has been to work together in a wide range of areas to facilitate systemic change within the school and foster improved student achievement. There are many components within this partnership, but one of the more exciting is that a fully functional computer training facility used by both bank employees and the CHS community which offers computer training using current software.

Community Service

THE HEARD MUSEUM & CLARENDON SCHOOL

The Heard Museum and Clarendon School are cooperating the enable 5th and 6th grade students to be tour guides for school groups in the interactive exhibit, "Old Ways, New Ways," during the academic year. Approximately 21 students are active guides. Students enter the program at the end of the 4th grade and continue in the program through 6th grade. The Heard Museum trains, schedules and provides continuing education for participants. Clarendon School principal, Mr. Merrill, recruits 4th grade candidates, assists with students selection and schedules and provides transportation for student guides to fulfill their commitment at the museum.
