Find college workshops at College Depot College Depot at the Burton Barr Central Library offers several free workshops per week to help people of all ages find their way to a successful post-secondary experience. All workshops are listed on the College Depot online calendar located at phoenix.gov/collegedepot. All participants must RSVP to attend a workshop by calling 602-261-8847, emailing college.depot@phoenix.gov, or visiting College Depot at 1221 N Central Ave on the second floor.
Youth Ambassador Program: High school sophomores and juniors interested in traveling to another country may now apply for the 2010 Phoenix Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Exchange Program by 4 p.m. Dec. 4. The Youth Ambassador Exchange Program is available to Phoenix residents and offers students the opportunity to visit one of Phoenix’s 9 sister cities next summer to learn more about the city and its culture through a three-week home-hosted experience. Phoenix students reciprocate and house their host brother or sister when they visit Phoenix during the same summer. Phoenix Sister Cities pays half of the travel expenses between Phoenix and the selected sister city, while the remaining half is the responsibility of the students and their families. 2010 Outstanding Young Man/Young Woman of the Year Award: The City of Phoenix Youth and Education Office is now accepting applications for the 2010 Outstanding Young Man/Young Woman of the Year Award. The award is available to current high school students and offers a $250 award to one young man and one young woman from each of the eight council districts in Phoenix. One young man and one young woman will then be selected from the winners to receive an additional $2,000. Applicants must reside within the City of Phoenix and send their application in by December 11, 2009. Applications are available online.

WrestleMania Reading Challenge: Would you like to win a trip for two to WrestleMania 26 or other cool prizes? All you have to do is read a combined total of ten books between October 18 and January 19 and design a bookmark around a slogan that promotes reading. Participants must also complete and submit a log sheet indicating the name and author of the books read. The Reading Challenge will be held at the Burton Barr Library on March 27 10am - noon. Hispanic Caucus offers scholarships to Latino high school seniors: The NSBA’s National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members is offering scholarships for Latino high school seniors. This year, two $1,000 scholarships will be offered in each of NSBA’s four regions. The deadline to apply is Jan. 29, 2010. The application is available at www.nsba.org/caucus. The caucus requests that this information be shared with school counselors. Scholarship winners will be announced at the NHC business meeting in Chicago, to be held April 11 in conjunction with the NSBA Annual Conference, which runs from April 10-13.
International Young Artists: The Phoenix Sister Cities 2010 Young Artists Competition Theme has been announced! Your World what makes you, you? International exchanges and travel can impact you in many different ways. What cultures and experiences have influenced your life? All artwork will be displayed during the month of March at the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix Arizona and awards will be given out at an awards ceremony. After being exhibited in Phoenix, the winning artwork will be entered into the Sister Cities International Young Artists Competition where they are eligible to win more prizes.
