What are the requirements for applications?

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed all courses for a master’s degree in public administration, business administration, or a closely related field before June 28, 2010. You are eligible to apply even if you still need to complete an internship, thesis, or a comprehensive exam, as long as all courses are completed before June 28.

 

What is a closely related field?

Past examples include planning, various fields within business (i.e. finance, management or economics), political science, or public affairs and public policy programs.

 

Can I apply if I have a bachelor's degree and work experience?

No, completed course work towards a master's degree is required.

 

What is the salary?

While the salary schedule for 2010-11 is not yet in place, the present management intern salary is $36,525.

 

How long is the internship and why does it begin in the summer?

The internship is for one year and runs the duration of the city’s fiscal year -
July 1 through June 30, annually.

 

What happens after the year is completed?

Successful interns are highly recruited for available positions by departments, although the city does not guarantee a job at the conclusion of the internship.

 

What is the closing date for applications?

All application materials must be received no later than the date indicated on the job announcement.

 

How important are the application materials?

Extremely important. Our review panel uses this information to select the most qualified candidates for interview.

 

When are decisions made about whom to interview?

This recruitment draws a large interest from across the country. After the application materials are received, it takes some time to review them and create an eligibility list. We anticipate narrowing the pool of candidates and inviting finalists to interviews in early May 2010. Selections are expected to be made by the end of May 2010.

 

How many internship positions are available?

The city usually selects two or three individuals a year.

 

How many applications do you receive?

The city of Phoenix management internship is a nationally recruited position. In past years, an average of 90 applications have been received.

 

Do you only hire interns from Arizona?

No. Interns have come from all over the United States. In recent years, interns have been hired from Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Texas and California, as well as Arizona.

 

Where do the interns work?

Each intern performs rotational assignments including the City Manager's Office and selected departments. Past departments include: Development Services, Planning, Personnel, Neighborhood Services, Equal Opportunity, Aviation, Community and Economic Development, Human Services, City Clerk and Public Works.

 

What projects do the interns work on?

Projects include: writing management studies, Council reports, and operations analyses; attending staff meetings; staffing City Council meetings and subcommittee meetings; responding to citizens’ requests for service; and analyzing departmental and program budgets.
