Urban Survival is a vital program of the Phoenix Fire Department and the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association, Local 493, in meeting our mission of teaching our customers to Prevent Harm and Survive. Through this program, we teach an array of fire prevention and life safety skills. The Urban Survival Program includes a comprehensive injury prevention curriculum for elementary schools, high schools, and the community at large in the City of Phoenix. This program was developed by Phoenix firefighters in conjunction with schoolteachers, nurses, physicians, school administrators, and numerous individuals from a variety of community based agencies. Urban Survival is taught by specially trained firefighters - Community Education Specialists (“Fire Pals”), on-duty fire companies, volunteers and school teachers.

The Urban Survival message is simple, injuries are NOT accidents.  Through an array of modules, the Phoenix Fire Department shows that many injuries involve risk factors that can be studied, understood and controlled. Urban Survival teaches fire prevention and life safety skills necessary to prevent tragedies to you and your loved ones – it is our family helping yours.

The delivery methods are dynamic, creative, innovative, and often entertaining. By making the messages relevant, meaningful, sensory rich, and fun, our customers learn and remember how to lead a safer life. Numerous success stories have been told, many lives have been saved, and many tragedies have been prevented.

In the past year the Phoenix Fire Department has shared our life saving Urban Survival Program at over 720 community events speaking to over 200,000 customers. We have taught this program in over 110 grade schools and 6 high schools. The challenge is great but the Phoenix Fire Department's Community Involvement Section and the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association, Local 493 are committed. Until there are no more drownings, no more child-set fires, no more fire fatalities, no more unrestrained children involved in car crashes, no more car/pedestrian crashes, no more “accidents” – The Phoenix Fire Department Fire Pals will be out in force making Phoenix a safer place to live.
