Out of State Peace Officer Lateral Transfer
Information Provided by the Police Department

The Phoenix Police Department offers a lateral transfer program for qualified out-of-state certified officers.

Laterals get competitive salaries between $43,284 and $60,881 to $45,094.40 and $63,440.00.  Contact a recruiter for more details.  602-534-COPS or recruiting.ppd@phoenix.gov

    (Lateral Officers are eligible to apply on the first enrollment date after completion of the FTO program)
  • Education tuition reimbursement up to $4,311 per year.
  • Longevity Performance Pay (Continous employment with the City of Phoenix) up to $4,000 per year.
  • Bilingual Incentive pay - $10 per hour.
  • Once probation has been completed as a Phoenix police officer, lateral and prior service, certified police officers may use 50% of other police agency time to meet the three year requirement for specialty assignments.
  • Lateral Officers are eligible to work in an off duty capacity after completion of FTO training.

SALARY:

Based on your years of service and current salary, you may qualify for up to $60,881.60 annually.

DUTIES:

Performs general police work in the protection of life and property through crime prevention and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Successful applicants will be required to complete the city of Phoenix two-week post academy.

EXPERIENCE:

Applicants must have at least one year of experience as a peace officer/deputy with at least one year dedicated to patrol duties not including administrative and training assignments. Applicants cannot be separated from a law enforcement agency for more than 4 months at the time of application.

ALSO REQUIRED:

Applicants must successfully complete a background investigation and participate in a medical and psychological exam appropriate to the Police Department. Our hiring standards require no felony convictions and no dishonorable discharge from the US Armed Forces. Candidates can not have used narcotics or dangerous drugs within the past seven years and can not have used marijuana within the past three years.

Use of City vehicles is required in the performance of assigned duties. Individuals must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely and possess and maintain a valid Arizona Operators license.

Within the previous 36 months candidates must:

  • Have fewer than 8 driving violation points
  • Have no more than two chargeable accidents
  • No convictions for DUI (one per lifetime)
  • Have no loss of license due to cancellation, refused, revoked, suspended, or restricted as a direct result of a moving violation.

Police Officer positions require working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.

RESIDENCE:

Maricopa County Residency is required within 24 months after the date of hire and must be maintained.

EVALUATION:

Applicants will be evaluated on the City of Phoenix application, verification of peace/police officer status, experience and successful completion of the background phase. Qualified candidates who are hired will attend a needs assessment and certification process (approximately 4-6 weeks), to include the AZ P.O.S.T wavier exam. Once an out of state officer successfully completes the AZ P.O.S.T wavier exam, they will attend a 2 week post academy and then be assigned to a Field Training Squad in patrol.

A copy of your academy graduation certificate must be attached to the application. All candidates serve a one year probationary period before permanent status is granted.

Qualified applicants will be sent a background packet to fill out and return. All background packets will be reviewed. Qualified applicants will be called for an interview. Successful applicants can expect to undergo an extensive background investigation. Your agency will not be notified until you are considered for conditional hire.
