Del Rio Brownfields Visioning Summary Report Now Available

Jan. 20, 2012

Residents can learn about options recommended for the redevelopment of brownfields in the South Mountain/Del Rio area, in the Del Rio Brownfields Visioning Summary Report, available at phoenix.gov/environment/brownfields (click on Del Rio Area Brownfields Planning Project).

Residents developed the recommendations through several community workshops in 2011, as part of the Del Rio Area Brownfields Planning Project. An Environmental Protection Agency grant is funding the planning project, which is built on public participation.

The Del Rio area includes land between Seventh Avenue and 16th Street, from the Salt River south to Broadway Road. The three brownfields identified for this project are: Site #1, 70 acres, west of Central Avenue; Site #2, 10 acres, east of Central Avenue, near Rio Salado Audubon Center; and Site #3, the former Del Rio landfill.

The next phase of the project will be to obtain community input through a series of monthly community planning meetings to prepare the final brownfields plan. Meetings will be held Jan. 31, Feb. 28, March 27 and April 24. Each meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Rio Salado Audubon Center, 3131 S. Central Ave.

The term “brownfields” is used to describe real estate that is contaminated or perceived to be contaminated by hazardous substances or petroleum in soil or groundwater. Examples include old or abandoned gas stations, landfills and industrial facility sites.
