Expect Detours When Entering or Exiting Sky Harbor on the East Side This Weekend

July 13, 2011

A section of State Route (SR) 143 east of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will be closed this weekend as the Arizona Department of Transportation works to make major improvements to Airport freeway access.

The closure of SR 143 between University and Washington will take place from 9 p.m. Friday, July 15 through 5 a.m. Monday, July 18. It will also require detours for drivers who normally use Loop 202 to enter or exit Sky Harbor.

To avoid detours and delays, drivers should enter and exit the Airport on the west side. The detours this weekend are as follows:

Entering the Airport from the East or Southeast:

  • From the southeast Valley driving north on SR 143, exit at University, take westbound University to northbound 44th Street, then take the Sky Harbor exit.
  • Drivers who usually take SR 143 from the north will instead take 44th Street south from Washington Street to westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard.
  • Entering from the 202 in the east Valley, exit at Van Buren/52nd Street Exit 4, then drive west on Van Buren Street, south on 44th Street, then take westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard.

Exiting the Airport to the East:

  • To access Loop 202, exit Sky Harbor at 44th Street. Drive north past Van Buren Street to the 202 eastbound on-ramp.
  • Drivers may also connect with Interstate 10 and U.S. 60 eastbound. Drive south on 44th Street, east on University Drive then take southbound SR 143 to I-10/U.S. 60

ADOT is constructing three new ramps to improve access between SR 143 and Sky Harbor. When the project is completed next summer, motorists exiting the Airport will be able to drive directly from Sky Harbor Boulevard to SR 143. In addition, ADOT is building a new ramp to connect westbound Loop 202 more directly with SR 143.
