Officials to Thank Business Partners for Helping City Save Nearly $800,000

Aug. 31, 2010

Today, Mayor Phil Gordon, City Council members and city management will recognize and thank more than 120 businesses that have voluntarily agreed to reduce their invoices to the city by 3 percent for fiscal year 2010-11. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown, 340 N. Third St.; no city dollars are being used for this event.

"We've asked our employees and our residents to give back during these tough financial times, so we thought it was appropriate to also reach out to the contractors who do work with the city to ask them to give back," said Gordon.

"The response has been very encouraging, from the smallest to the largest contractors who do work for the city," he said.

Because of their commitment, the contractors will help save the city an estimated $785,000 during fiscal year 2010-11. These dollars contribute to the city's Innovation and Efficiency efforts, which to date total nearly $20 million in savings.

"It is important to have the private sector involved, and I appreciate the creativity and innovative ideas these business leaders have contributed in helping to improve city services and save money for the community," said Councilman Bill Gates, chairman of the City Council Finance, Innovation and Efficiency Subcommittee.

Other Innovation and Efficiency savings identified to date include consolidating city departments and functions ($1.7 million); streamlining the Reserve-A-Ride program ($860,000); eliminating paper pay stubs ($85,000); rebidding life insurance contracts ($797,000); moving the Public Works Department from its former building to City Hall ($250,000); and other savings and efficiencies ($3.3 million).
