Phoenix Sister Cities Awarded Outstanding Delegation in Mexico Competition
The Phoenix Sister Cities (PSC) delegation to the Toluca Model of the United Nations (TOLMUN) conference was named Outstanding Delegation for its performance at the conference.
The PSC delegation competed in a series of activities and debates against delegations from Fort Worth, TX, Luxembourg, Germany and Mexico at the international conference. The conference took place from Oct. 20 – 22 at the Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus in Toluca, Mexico.
PSC selected its delegates based on their outstanding service as members of the Sister Cities’ Youth Ambassador Exchange Program. The Phoenix delegates representing local Phoenix high schools included Kyran Alexander, Greenway High School; Jean-Luc Cavnar-Lewandowski, Brophy College Prep Academy; Stephanie Cole, Greenway High School; Cassalyn (Cassie) Gannon, Xavier College Prep Academy; Adam Klever, North High School; Kyle Marshall, Shadow Mountain High School; William (Billy) Mask, Shadow Mountain High School; Virginia (Gini) Morgan, Arcadia High School; Caitlin Spencer, Sunnyslope High School; and Lindsey Walker, Tempe Prep Academy.
In addition to the group award, Cassie Gannon and Caitlan Spencer were named Best Delegate for their respective committees, while Billy Mask and Lindsey Walker received honorable mention.
Models UN began in 1920 with a group of scholars who wanted to model the League of Nations. Currently about 400,000 students around the world are involved in Models UN, which simulates the United Nations system. Students assume the role of U.N. delegates and debate relevant affairs on the organization’s current agenda. Students adopt the official position of their home country and debate complex, worldwide issues, such as human rights, the environment, ethnic conflicts, refugees, terrorism and peacekeeping; with the objective of reaching a consensus in the resolution of global problems.
Delegates were able to participate in the TOLMUN conference through private donations, family contributions and fundraising. Students were responsible for their own airfare and all participants stayed in host homes with Mexican families.
