Open House for New Fire Station #72 Serving Northeast Phoenix

Nov. 8, 2010

The Phoenix Fire Department invites the community to see the newest addition to our family: Phoenix Fire Station #72 in northeast Phoenix. City of Phoenix and Phoenix Fire Department officials will all be on hand for the 9:30 a.m. dedication.

Because of the explosive growth in the northeast Valley, Station 72 was needed to decrease response times for fire and emergency service to the area. The Phoenix Fire Department serves the fifth largest city in the nation, with more than 519.6 square miles and 1.60 million people. Funding for the station was provided through the 2006 City Bond Election.

The public is invited to meet the station’s firefighters, take a tour, and enjoy a mini muster game for the kids! Come in and get your car seat checked for safety!

Some Topics About the Environmental Design LEED

The design has incorporated the City of Phoenix building standards for reduced energy consumption and will be a LEED Certified Project. The building super structure consists of insulated concrete forms (ICF) and masonry and the roof structure is a structural insulated panel system (SIPS). High energy efficient HVAC and electrical systems are included in the design along with products manufactured with recycled materials to meet the sustainability goals.

Water Conservation

  • Fire Station #72 saved over 41% of water from a similar building, saving more than 34,000 Gallons of water/ year.
  • Desert landscaping will save another 100,000 gallons per year over turf and other high-water need landscaping.

Energy

  • Fire Station #72 saved almost 30% of electricity from a similar building. This saved over 72,700 kWh of electricity per year!
  • 72,700 kWh of electricity is enough for the annual use of 6.5 American houses.
  • The facility also has 10kW of photovoltaic panels, generating about 16,500 kWh or energy annually.

Recycling

The Phoenix Fire Station saved over 81% of waste from going to a landfill during construction. 256 tons of construction wastes were recycled during construction!
Over 20 % of the building’s material is recycled! Building materials were carefully selected to minimize environmental impact. Preference was given to materials with recycled content.

Site Preservation

Located in a pristine desert habitat, the owner, design, and construction teams established a goal of reducing the site’s disturbance during construction to protect the natural eco system and habitats.
