Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Right During Holiday Season

Dec. 19, 2011

Recycle Palooza GraphicDuring the holiday season, the city of Phoenix Public Works Department is reminding residents that it’s as important to know what doesn’t go into the blue recycle container as what does get recycled.

The city's residential recycling program does not accept the following holiday related materials: Plastic or foil wrapping paper; ribbons/bows/yarn; foil-embossed greeting cards; plastic bubble wrap and foam packing materials; confetti; strings of lights; light bulbs; Christmas trees (artificial or real); holiday decorations; electrical extension cords; paper cups; candles; and "film" plastic.

Tips for “reducing” and “reusing” during the holidays:  Use newspaper comics instead of wrapping paper; reuse gift bags again and again; make gift tags from old holiday cards; save boxes and use again; return plastic bags to Bag Central Station containers at Phoenix grocery stores and other participating retailers for recycling.

For more information on reducing, reusing and recycling, and to find out where to “recycle” your live Christmas tree, visit phoenix.gov/publicworks or call 602-262-7251.
