Northeast Phoenix Residents Asked to Volunteer for City Bond Committees

Councilwoman Peggy Neely is encouraging northeast Phoenix residents to volunteer for important committees that will help shape the city’s future. City Council recently passed a measure calling for a bond election in March 2006. Residents will vote on what types of future major building and renovation projects the city will pursue.

Residents also will have a say in guiding which projects make it to the ballot, with 17 separate Citizens’ Bond subcommittees working on the process and making recommendations.

“The city of Phoenix bond program is unique nationally in the way that residents have a strong say in the process,” said Neely. “Volunteering to serve on a bond subcommittee is one of the best ways you can make a positive impact on northeast Phoenix and the whole city.”

Past bond elections have funded major projects like the new Desert Broom library, police and fire facilities and northeast Phoenix parks. In 10 past bond elections, voters citywide have overwhelmingly supported city projects, passing 95 percent of the requested funding.

The subcommittees cover a variety of topics and need volunteers with different areas of expertise. Please contact Councilwoman Neely’s office at 602-262-7445 or send an e-mail to Council District 2 if you are interested in volunteering or learning more. The subcommittee meetings and work will take place in September and October 2005.
