Neely Says Zoning Decision Opens Door for Needed Retail
The Phoenix City Council’s decision last night to grant a rezoning request at I-17 and Carefree Highway is the first step toward bringing needed retail to that area, according to District 2 Councilwoman Peggy Neely, who represents the area. The decision followed the recommendations of the city’s Planning Commission and the North Gateway Village Planning Committee.
“We heard from the neighborhood and understood their desire for stores, restaurants and coffee shops close to their homes,” said Neely. “We will work to ensure that quality future development follows.”
The State Land Department owns the parcel and plans to auction the land next year.
A separate zoning case to the south, at I-17 and Dove Valley Road, is scheduled for City Council consideration in December. The city Planning Commission has recommended a special auto mall permit for that site. Councilwoman Neely has requested that the city work with land-owner Westcor to get more details on important design issues, like signage, landscaping, building height and other factors.
“We will only consider the highest design standards,” said Neely. “We will work to make sure that neighbors and all stakeholders are involved in the process.”
