Candlelight Vigil on Anniversary of Murdered Youth

March 17, 2010

A candlelight vigil will be held to honor the memory of murdered gay youth Maurice Dupree Green, at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, March 21, at Cielito Park, 3402 W. Campbell Ave. Green, also known as “Melissa,” was fatally shot on March 21, 2006, as he walked northbound on 35th and Glenrosa avenues dressed as a woman.

The community is invited to attend the vigil, which will be held a few blocks from where Green was shot. “It’s been four years and we haven’t forgotten about Maurice Green. We’ll continue to honor his memory and let the public know that the Police Department still needs information to solve this hate crime,” said Councilman Tom Simplot.

After four years, Green’s murder remains unsolved. Anyone with information about his murder should contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or toll free at 1-800-343-TIPS. A cash reward of up to $4,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspected killer.

The vigil is hosted by the Green Family, Councilman Simplot and the District 4 Office, the Phoenix Police Department, GLBT Police Advisory Board, ‘N Touch News, Chute and AHRF. For more information about the vigil, contact Megan Schmitz with Councilman Simplot’s office at 602-262-4830.
