Aggressive driver program helps community
The Traffic Education Safety Unit (TESU) conducted 21 aggressive driver programs in the month of August, 2009. The programs were spread throughout the entire city and were chosen based on high collision areas, traffic complaints, and officer observations. The purpose of the programs was to reduce aggressive driving behaviors. Officer Walter Olsen with TESU says, “Traffic collisions are one of the most common ways people are injured or killed, our goal with these programs is to reduce crashes and save lives.” An Aggressive Driver Interdiction Program (ADIP) uses unmarked cars and motorcycle officers to saturate an area with high visibility and strict enforcement. By stopping aggressive driving behaviors, we can reduce collisions and make the streets safer for the citizens of Phoenix.
Throughout the program, a total of 1310 citations were issued, including:
286 speeding citations
76 red light citations
50 seatbelt citations
20 child restraint citations
85 tows
1 aggressive driver arrest
1 extreme DUI
8 misdemeanor arrests
2 felony arrests
155 educational contact
