Teens arrested in murder of Luz Navarro
Luz Navarro, 48, had just completed some Christmas shopping and had returned to her vehicle when she was shot and killed. The senseless, random act of violence occurred in the parking lot of a large retail store located in the area of 3rd Street and Baseline Road.
During a media briefing at Phoenix police headquarters late Wednesday afternoon, spokesperson Sgt. Andy Hill said, “This was a random crime. Ms. Navarro was an innocent victim who did nothing wrong." Hill had attended the funeral services for Navarro that morning and related that the huge turnout spoke clearly how much the woman who was so involved in her community was loved and respected.
As services for Navarro were being held, Phoenix police arrested two men accused of the crime. Two search warrants were served by the Phoenix police Special Assignments Unit and South Mountain Precinct patrol and NET officers; one warrant at 4800 W. Caldwell where Kenneth DaWayne Williams, 19, was arrested and the other in the 1800 block of W. Lynne Lane, where Michael Thomas Guzman, 18, was taken into custody after a traffic stop. Guzman was driving a 1992 Dodge pickup that was seized as evidence.
Sgt. Hill closed the briefing stating that the Navarro family expressed their thanks to both the community and the media for their help in solving this case. The investigation continues.
