Shannon's Law Operation

This is the seventh year the Phoenix Police Department has conducted an operation to stop random gunfire. The “Shannon’s Law Operation,” which takes its name from 14-year-old Shannon Smith who died in 1999 as a result of someone senselessly firing a gun into to the air, will be taking place tonight. The media has been working diligently to get out the message and the result of the partnership has been a 47% reduction in “shots fired” calls over the past five years. We want to continue working to stop this dangerous practice.

In preparation for this year’s operation, nearly 40,000 flyers have been made available to be passed out by neighborhood and business groups as well as officers, informing the community of the dangers and consequences of firing a weapon in the city limits. Tomorrow, December 29th, at 2:00 p.m., officers in the South Mountain Precinct will be meeting at the station to go out and pass out flyers in the neighborhoods in the precinct.
