Celebrating Two Special Volunteers

As one receives his eternal reward, the other humbly accepts accolades of another kind. Both men are deserving of each for having unselfishly given back to our community. While both of these fine men would not ask for any recognition, both sincerely deserve a salute; their efforts are shining examples of the giving nature of so many who work within the Phoenix Police Department.

Ken Towne Table Ken Towne, V0829,was a fixture within the Phoenix Police Department. You may not have known his name, but if you ever had occasion to be in the lobby of Phoenix Police Headquarters, you couldn’t miss the soft-spoken, older gentleman who time and time again manned fundraiser tables for too many events to mention. He always had a kind word for everyone. Ken joined the department’s C.O.P.S. organization in 2004 and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2007.  Ken passed away on June 21, 2009 after suffering pneumonia and congestive heart failure. He will always be remembered by his police family as well as his personal family.

Phoenix Officer James Holmes is a department member who harbors the same giving spirit as Ken Towne. Holmes, a 16-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department, retired from a military career before joining the department. Anyone who knows Officer Holmes knows he is the kind of guy who gets involved!  One of the organizations he has given so much to showed their appreciation with a special “Celebrating People in Action” volunteer award on Thursday, June 25, 2009.  Officer Holmes, currently assigned as a Public Information Officer, has been deeply involved with youth programs at Luke AFB for many years.  He received his special award from Colonel Henry Reed, Vice Commander, 56th Fighter Wing, Luke AFB.  Congratulations, Officer Holmes!
