2003 Keynote Speaker

This year, to mark the 12th annual International Women's Day Luncheon, we were proud to host keynote speaker Susan L. Taylor, editorial director of Essence magazine. Through her monthly Essence column, "In the Spirit," and her numerous public appearances, Taylor has become an inspiration to the many women who admire her commitment to family, faith, self-esteem and health. She is the author of two best-selling books, "Lessons in Living," and "In the Spirit: The Inspirational Writings of Susan L. Taylor," a collection of her monthly columns. This year's crowd of nearly 1,500 luncheon attendees were both inspired and energized by her message. Delia Garcia, president and CEO of the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, was this year's honorary chair.

Also announced at the luncheon was the creation of the Mary Ann Huerta Jenkins Fellowship to celebrate the strength of women in public service. The scholarship was developed in association with the Arizona State University School of Public Affairs in memory of Mary Ann,a longtime city of Phoenix employee and assistant to the Phoenix city manager, who passed away in August 2002. It is a fitting tribute to Mary Ann's achievements as an ASU graduate dedicated to women's issues and helping the underprivileged of our community. The annual scholarship of $2,500 for a deserving female master's of public administration candidate is named in honor of Mary Ann.

In the past eight years, more than $350,000 has been raised for scholarships that were awarded to 10 local colleges benefiting 400 women. Platinum sponsors of the event include KTVK 3TV/Mas Arizona, ARAMARK, Arizona Public Service, city of Phoenix, Philips Semiconductor, Prensa Hispana, Today's Arizona Woman and Wells Fargo. Gold sponsors include America West Airlines and the Dial Corporation.

The 2004 event will be March 16 at the Phoenix Civic Plaza. For sponsorship opportunities, contact the city of Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department at 602-261-8242/voice or 602-534-1557/TTY.
