The city of Phoenix, Phoenix Women's Commission and the International Women's Day Steering Committee host an annual celebration of International Women's Day that commemorates the continuing struggle of women to improve their lives and raises money for scholarships for women to continue their education. Proceeds from this year's celebration funded $30,000 in scholarships in 10 local colleges and universities.
Annually, a $2,500 fellowship is awarded to the Arizona State University School of Public Affairs in memory of Mary Ann Huerta Jenkins, a city employee and ASU graduate.![]() Juliane Malveaux, Ph.D., 2005 Keynote Speaker

Dr. Julianne Malveaux, a nationally known economist, author and commentator, is a writer and syndicated columnist as well as a
committed activist and civic leader. Her observations on issues such as race, culture, gender and their economic impacts are
helping to shape public view in the 21st century. An accomplished author and editor, she most recently
co-authored "Unfinished Business: A Democrat and a Republican Take on the 10 Most Important Issues Women Face." She is a moving speaker
whose life experiences have created a unique perspective that will leave everyone re-evaluating the way they view the world. This year's
more than 1,400 attendees were captivated by her message.
