Hoops for Hope
VISION
If we can take a young lady from her “hell” for just a short amount of time to let her see the light at the end of her tunnel, let us move as fast as we can.
If we can provide the hope and caring for a young woman, maybe just maybe she WILL want to hold on for one more day.
If we are able to reach out to a group of young ladies and provide them with an opportunity that may not happen otherwise-why not?
If we can break through to at least one young woman and help be a part of a process of a bright future for her- LETS DO IT!
HISTORY
Hoops for Hope is a volunteer based, free basketball clinic put on by Phoenix Police Department. The clinic is a four day camp offered to underprivileged teenaged girls between the ages of thirteen to seventeen years of age, throughout the city of Phoenix. The participants come from different walks of life and in the beginning only share one thing- the love of basketball. What the newcomers do not know is the positive mental challenge they will encounter throughout the camp and the new levels of physical fitness they will reach. Hoops for Hope provided a level of learning for all ability levels in the game of basketball. The experienced coaching staff ranges from high school experience up to professional level of play. Hoops for Hope provides classroom time where motivational guest speakers volunteer their time to share with participants about their profession and the hard work and dedication it took to become successful. Members of the Grand Canyon University and Arizona State University women’s basketball team discuss the demands of being student-athletes.
GOAL
To help learn the fundamentals of basketball and learn how to work well with others. Hoops for Hope staff hopes to create an open line of communication for each participant after the clinic. Allow young women to experience life on her own but to assure her she is not alone. The generation these young ladies are growing up in is extremely challenging. They are experiencing an economic downfall, an increase of date rape, physical and mental abuse, teen pregnancy, single-parent families, drug abuse and gang involvement.
PHILOSOPHY
As officers we see the misfortune that many young women are growing up in, it is up to us to make a difference. The general theme is about “Empowerment,” to help these girls realize their potential to be successful while maintaining their self-worth and dignity. To provide insight about life and instilling the feeling of PRIDE- being proud of who they are and to be proud of being a woman.
