Just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, a 52-year-old Moon Valley woman opened her door to a man she knew and was shot multiple times. The woman managed to escape her home and alert neighbor’s that she’d been shot.  Phoenix police who arrived at the scene found the woman outside of a neighbors home; Phoenix Fire was summoned and transported the woman to a local hospital in critical condition.

As information developed, officers learned that the suspect was possibly still inside the victim’s residence. A perimeter was established and the Phoenix Police Special Assignments Unit and K9 officers responded. During the next two hours, as the neighborhood remained on alert, SAU tactically approached the woman’s home, attempted to verbally communicate with anyone who may be inside, and at approximately 6 p.m., made a tactical entry into the residence.

Just inside the front door, officers found the suspect, Michael Anthony Schmidt, 47, deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was found nearby.  Investigators learned that the victim and Schmidt had been involved in a short-term relationship that the woman had tried to end.  The investigation is continuing. The victim is hospitalized and remains in stable condition after undergoing surgery for her injuries.
