Patrol car at scenePhoenix police responded to a residence in the area of 39th Avenue and Osborn around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, June 30, 2010. Information received from a woman inside the home who had called 9-1-1 indicated that a 12-year-old girl and her brother, 17, were in an altercation. The teen had removed a handgun from a small safe inside the house. The 9-1-1 operator reported hearing shots fired inside the residence as information was being dispatched to officers.

Four Phoenix officers responded and set up tactical positions near the house. They heard a gunshot inside the residence and moments later the 17-year-old came out of the house, pointed his weapon at the officers and made confrontational statements. Pointing his weapon at two of the officers, the suspect continued toward them, forcing them to fire. The suspect was hit several times and fell to the ground, dropping the weapon. He was transported to a local hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Other family members were safely removed from the house without injuries. In addition, no officers were injured during the incident.

The investigation is continuing.
