Public Works is committed to leading by example in energy conservation and efficiency activities for the city’s facilities and operations. Public Works has been an innovator and pacesetter in sustainability for more than three decades. The department has had an Energy Management Program and Energy Fund for municipal operations for more than 30 years and has realized over $120M in cost/savings avoidance during this time. Public Works also pioneered single-stream recycling among municipalities more than 25 years ago. In 1993, Public Works built the first downtown district cooling and thermal storage system which supports more than 1.2M sq. ft. in the Downtown Phoenix area (seven buildings) and returns annual energy savings of more than $200 thousand.
The department is the lead for coordinating programs and initiatives to accomplish the city’s renewable energy goal of utilizing 15% renewable energy by 2025 (solar, landfill gas and digester gas); and is a critical player in accomplishing the city’s Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for city operations to 5% below the 2005 levels by 2015.
