Screening & Assessment Services (SAS) provides a critical link between the court and treatment providers to ensure defendants are referred to, and are participating in, appropriate programs to address issues of chemical dependency, domestic violence, sexual deviancy and/or mental health issues.
The process starts with a court order to SAS followed by each defendant responding to an objective assessment instrument designed to identify causal issues related to their offense. A state-licensed counselor then reviews the assessment results and completes an in-depth interview with the defendant to determine the type/severity of issues and intervention/treatment needs to eliminate future involvement in the Criminal Justice System. The counselors assist in the selection of an appropriate treatment provider and then monitor the defendant’s progress at thirty day intervals to ensure compliance with treatment. Noncompliant defendants are summoned back to court to address their unwillingness or inability to complete the assigned program.
Screening & Assessment Services also assists judges in their sentencing decisions by completing court ordered Pre-Sentence Reviews
