Berry's Veiled Mountain combined art and engineering to fulfill the community's desire to enhance the appearance and security of the site, which performs an essential function for the city's wastewater system. He drew inspiration from the nearby mountains to create the undulating line of the security walls/fence and sweeping contours of the steel shade canopies. He selected purplish lava rock for the gabion walls and rusted the finish of the fence staves and canopies to harmonize with the red-rock beauty of the surrounding desert hills. Berry artist hand-forged the security fence's five hundred pickets out of angle iron, then worked with the engineering and construction team to incorporate them into the wall. The project is part of a partnership between the Phoenix Water Services Department and Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture Public Art Program to improve the design of neighborhood water facilities citywide.
