Mayor Greg Stanton's third State of the City Address charts a new course for Phoenix to build an innovation-based, export economy that works for everyone. Stanton gave his remarks on March 19, 2014 at an event sponsored by the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce.
Stanton said that to move beyond the outdated economic models of the past, Phoenix must take unprecedented steps to expand trade and build global partnerships, invest in its human capital, expand its transit system to meet the needs of the future, and create an "Innovation Infrastructure" that leads in the 21st century.
Specifically, Stanton said that Phoenix must work to double exports to Mexico in the next five years, and double total exports around the globe in the next ten years. He also said that to better meet today's needs and prepare for future growth, Phoenix must triple the number of light rail miles in the city.
