Come for the Flying, Stay for the FunCome for the Flying, Stay for the Fun

PHOENIX – Kids can have a difficult time traveling – who wants to be stuck in the seat next to their big sister for eight straight hours? – but when they fly through Phoenix, the Airport is the destination.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is enjoyable for kids of all ages, and for those big kids at heart who long for summertime fun. Begin an airplane trip out of Sky Harbor with a train ride: The PHX Sky Train® runs around the clock about every three minutes and connects all the terminals to East Economy Parking and 44th Street. It's free, it's easy, it's convenient, and it's a blast to ride! Insider tip: Stand in the very front of the first car and pretend you're a hood ornament on a rollercoaster.

Once inside a terminal, kids may get overwhelmed by the sounds and action of a busy airport like Sky Harbor, so this is a chance to redirect their attention to something they can enjoy with their parents: The Phoenix Airport Museum, one of the most unique museums around. Kids of all ages can enjoy a rotating selection of artwork, and free exhibitions are staged throughout each terminal. Insider tip: Take a self-guided tour by starting here: skyharbor.com/SelfGuidedTours.

Everyone has to eat, and every parent knows there's no reasoning with a voracious 10-year-old. That's why Sky Harbor has restaurants with options for every member of the family. Each terminal has eateries before and after security, and many restaurants have kids' menus ranging from old standbys like burgers and chicken strips to vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Insider tip: Most food is allowed through security but liquid foods, like salsas, syrups, gravy, etc. must be less than 3.4 liquid ounces. Check www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/prohibited-items for details.

Once behind security, a whole new world opens up to kids. From the carts carrying heaps of baggage to a jumbo jet, to the nonstop parade of planes coming and going, there are sites galore. What better way for a kid to burn off some excess energy before getting on a plane than to take a long walk? The Sky Harbor Fitness Trail is unique to Terminal 4 and features a mile-long scenic trail with visual markers of prominent Phoenix landmarks around the seven concourses. Insider tip: Children's play areas are located behind security in Terminals 2 and 4 for a good old-fashioned romp.

Whether arriving by PHX Sky Train® or taking advantage of the family-friendly parking spaces in the East Economy Lot, traveling with kids is more fun when everyone has spare time to enjoy the trip. The more time before a flight, the more there is to see and experience, so travelers should make sure to arrive at least two hours before their scheduled flight. Sightseers who aren't traveling and simply want to eat at one of the Airport's excellent restaurants, watch planes, look at art or ride the PHX Sky Train® with their kids – or just act like one for a while – can arrive as early as they want and can stay out after dark, too!

Visit skyharbor.com/BeforeTraveling/TravelingWithChildren for more helpful information on traveling with children, as well as activities and educational pieces for download.

##

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, America's Friendliest Airport®, has an annual economic impact of nearly $29 billion. Every day approximately 1,200 aircraft and more than 120,000 passengers arrive and depart at Sky Harbor, making it one of the ten busiest airports in the United States. PHX Sky Harbor is funded with Airport revenue. No tax dollars are used to support the Airport.

7/6/2016 4:00:00 PMSky Harbor Pubic Information Office(602) 673-5355
