Phoenix to Compete in International ‘Tech-Olympics’Phoenix to Compete in International ‘Tech-Olympics’<div class="ExternalClass7F988D55A7484178BC769FAAD04B2486"><table width="100%" class="ms-rteTable-default" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:100%;"><p>The City of Phoenix will participate in an international competition to develop an app that presents a solution to a global civic challenge.  The Smart City App Hack launched this year in Barcelona to empower citizens around the world to become app makers and create solutions for 21st century cities. <br><br>Through a partnership with the Institute for Digital Progress (iDP), Phoenix will compete alongside Barcelona, Helsinki, Dubai, Ghent and Portland and ultimately create a global network of "smart cities."<br><br>"The Smart City App Hack is a way for Phoenix to showcase local entrepreneurs and urban innovation on a global scale," said Councilman Bill Gates, who worked to bring the competition to Phoenix.  "I'm excited to see what our talented tech community can create to make our city smarter."<br><br>"It's like the tech-Olympics," said Mayor Greg Stanton. "Our strongest team will represent Phoenix at the final competition in Barcelona and demonstrate to the international community that our city is harnessing human capital for the greater civic good."<br><br>The Phoenix Smart City App Hack is the local portion of the competition and an app acceleration program that will go from the end of June through October.  Local app developers, entrepreneurs and residents are invited to submit web or mobile applications that incorporate solutions targeted to improve the five main themes identified as common global challenges: urban mobility, energy and emissions, shopping and retail, culture and tourism, and the collaborative city.<br><br>The competition's "Call for Entries" period now is open and runs through Aug. 1. During this period, teams or individuals can submit their projects – ranging from ideas to developed apps or businesses – for consideration for the Acceleration Phase.  <br><br>Five finalists will be selected by a panel of industry professionals and Phoenix city officials.  Selected finalists will receive additional mentorship from local companies and development professionals to prepare their app for market adoption and implementation.  New participants may still join during this period and are permitted to submit an existing, finished app directly to the online competition.<br><br>The contest will conclude with a City Finale where the five finalists, and all apps submitted through the Online Competition, will compete by pitching live on stage to a panel of judges.  Three City winners will be chosen and awarded cash prizes and entrance into the international Smart City App Hack. The Grand Champion will be sent, all-expenses paid, to represent the city of Phoenix at the international grand finale at the Smart City Expo 2015 in Barcelona.<br><br>In addition to the recognition of building a solution for the Phoenix community, creators of the top three apps will win cash prizes: $3,000 for first place; $1,000 for second place; and $500 for third place.
