Statement from Councilwoman Laura Pastor on HB2287 To Change Shannon's LawStatement from Councilwoman Laura Pastor on HB2287 To Change Shannon's Law

"House Bill 2287 proposes to lessen the prosecutorial standard for charging someone with criminal negligence when discharging firearms near occupied buildings within our City. I am strongly opposed to its passage.

If approved into law it certainly will have an unnecessary chilling and negative impact on the safety of families throughout our City and state. It is irresponsible of lawmakers to water down an existing standard that is currently working as a successful preventive measure.

Shannon's Law is a useful tool that has saved lives. It should not be made weaker or less effective at doing so, as this bill proposes, and I urge state legislators to vote it down."

3/1/2017 5:00:00 PMDavid Urbinato602-495-5405
