Statement from Vice Mayor Laura Pastor on Ad Hoc Committee RecommendationsStatement from Vice Mayor Laura Pastor on Ad Hoc Committee Recommendations

"Today the Phoenix City Council voted to recommend changes to the way our Police Department interacts with citizens and collects and reports information, and I am proud to have played a role in supporting this effort. Upon reflecting on the families and children who can be helped through these changes, those I see and talk to every day, I realize just how much these reforms are necessary.

"Operations Order 4.48 is a policy document that is outdated and in need of modernized language that will address several issues regarding citizens' rights, as well as help foster greater trust between students in schools and the resource officers who serve them on city campuses.

"More consistent and accurate data collection by Law Enforcement will keep better track of our Police Department's activity with citizens, and correct compliance issues with State law. Furthermore, by committing to not participate in the federal government's 287(g) program, our officers will not be asked or required to do the job reserved for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"While these changes are not perfect or all-inclusive, they will protect some of our most vulnerable populations – our students, refugees, immigrants, and victims and witnesses of crimes. More importantly, they will accomplish these things at no further cost to our citizen taxpayers, and will not bring added or unnecessary harm to our brave police officers.

"We need to do something. We cannot idly stand by and do nothing while individuals who are only doing whatever they can to better their lives and send their kids to school, are living in fear. This may not solve what has the potential to be a real, serious, and endemic problem in these times, but it is something, and it will help.

"I want to thank my colleagues for their work on this issue, our men and women in uniform who are willing to take on these changes, and those throughout the community who have spoken out on this matter, who continue to fight for their fellow citizens."

4/19/2017 7:00:00 AMMatthew Heil602-534-0108
