Councilwoman Laura Pastor's Statement on the Approved Water Rate IncreaseCouncilwoman Laura Pastor's Statement on the Approved Water Rate Increase

"Today's vote to approve a water rate increase for Phoenix residents was truly a difficult one, but sometimes in order to lead effectively you have to make very tough choices. Leadership is hard, and it takes courage to stand up for what you believe in and do what is right, especially under challenging circumstances. Even when faced with retaliation from your critics, it is extremely important to do the right thing, perhaps even more so.

Water is life, especially in the desert. The infrastructure needed to move it safely and efficiently in our continuously-growing City must be sound, secure, and modern. This is an issue bigger than just my district or others where the infrastructure is the oldest. It is bigger than the means necessary to support existing and future growth. It is bigger than even our great City.

This issue is about protecting our precious natural resources in times of projected crises and making sure we continue to manage them well. It is about the hundreds of jobs that will either be created or maintained because of the work that will be done with the resulting revenues. It is about paying tribute to the legacies of great leaders gone before us who fought for the same sustainable efforts, and whose shoulders we truly stand on to keep their legacies alive.

I am proud that we already have one of the most efficient and effective water utilities in the country among large cities. While it is also one of the most affordable when it comes to rates, I am fully committed to ensuring this equitability and the innovation of the entire system, and enhancing both as much as possible well into the future, for many generations to come."

1/10/2019 12:40:00 AMNick Valenzuela602-495-5405
