Statement from Councilwoman Laura Pastor on United States Supreme Court’s Decision to Block 2020 Census Citizenship QuestionStatement from Councilwoman Laura Pastor on United States Supreme Court’s Decision to Block 2020 Census Citizenship Question

“In May 2018, the Phoenix City Council authorized the City Manager to join a lawsuit to challenge the U.S. Census Bureau's decision to include a citizenship question in the 2020 Census. Today, the Supreme Court blocked the question from being added to the 2020 Census concluding that there was sufficient reason for concern about why the Commerce Department wanted to add the question. The City's, and other cities and states, concern has always been that this one question could cause a substantial undercount, particularly of noncitizens and Latinos and alienate a substantial segment of the population. This decision to block the question is wholly appropriate and allows the City of Phoenix to focus on what is most important: building trust with all our communities and getting an accurate count of everyone living in our city."

6/27/2019 7:00:00 PMNick Valenzuela602-495-5405
