Statement from Councilman Michael Nowakowski on Special City Council MeetingStatement from Councilman Michael Nowakowski on Special City Council Meeting<div class="ExternalClassD095B73DE0934DB1BEB967C6E5396C1D"><div>“I have long been a champion of having campaign finance reports online in an easy to find location for residents. This is about basic transparency and holding elected officials accountable for every cent of taxpayer money spent. <br><br>Today two of my colleagues and I called for a special city council meeting to discuss a transparency website for the city of Phoenix to make it easy for residents to find information on not just campaign finance but also gifts and travel – both city funded and trips paid for by outside groups. The saying “there is no such thing as a free lunch” is especially true in politics and taxpayers need to know who might be behind a gift or a trip.</div><div><br></div><div>Instead of having a real discussion of making city government more transparent, we had discussion shut down with the item pushed to a city council subcommittee. As councilmembers we need to lead by example and actions, not statements. Instead of doing what’s right, today the council did what was convenient. This is a disappointing outcome and a failure for taxpayers.”</div></div>2/8/2017 1:00:00 AMDavid Urbinato602-495-5405
