Statement from Councilman Michael Nowakowski on Fatal Weekend StabbingStatement from Councilman Michael Nowakowski on Fatal Weekend Stabbing

<span style="color:#212121;font-family:wf_segoe-ui_normal, "segoe ui", "segoe wp", tahoma, arial, sans-serif, serif, emojifont;font-size:14.6667px;background-color:#ffffff;">“I was deeply saddened upon hearing the news of the tragic events that occurred near Central and McDowell this past Saturday. I offer my deepest condolences to the family of the victim in this senseless crime and ask that we all keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they deal with this horrible situation.
<span style="color:#212121;font-family:wf_segoe-ui_normal, "segoe ui", "segoe wp", tahoma, arial, sans-serif, serif, emojifont;font-size:14.6667px;background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#212121;font-family:wf_segoe-ui_normal, "segoe ui", "segoe wp", tahoma, arial, sans-serif, serif, emojifont;font-size:14.6667px;background-color:#ffffff;">This loss of life serves as a reminder of the problems we are facing in addressing the mental health needs of our community. The suspect in this horrible crime spree has had a significant criminal record over the past decade as well as documented mental health concerns. The fact that he was released from prison on March 17 shows that more needs to be done at the state level in regards to mental health. This was clearly an example of individual who was not mentally fit and didn’t receive the necessary resources needed.
<span style="color:#212121;font-family:wf_segoe-ui_normal, "segoe ui", "segoe wp", tahoma, arial, sans-serif, serif, emojifont;font-size:14.6667px;background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#212121;font-family:wf_segoe-ui_normal, "segoe ui", "segoe wp", tahoma, arial, sans-serif, serif, emojifont;font-size:14.6667px;background-color:#ffffff;">The city of Phoenix, with the help of our community partners, has taken steps to address the homeless community and those with mental illness. However, it is not enough. I am calling on the state to do more in addressing the mental health crisis facing our community. Incidents, such as the one that occurred this past weekend, can no longer occur due to inaction at the state level. It is time for our state leaders to provide our mental health agencies and organizations the resources they need.”

4/3/2018 3:00:00 PMNick Valenzuela602-495-5405
