Statement from Councilman Michael Nowakowski on City of Surprise Urban Camping OrdinanceStatement from Councilman Michael Nowakowski on City of Surprise Urban Camping Ordinance

“This past Wednesday, the City of Surprise passed an urban camping ordinance which could put CASS services, our city and District 7 in a difficult situation.

I am not aware of any communication between the City of Surprise, the City of Phoenix, CASS or the Human Services Campus to discuss this ordinance and any unintended consequences it may cause. There will be times when CASS reaches capacity and no longer accept individuals. I ask the City of Surprise, what will happen to these individuals when that moment occurs?

The City of Phoenix has been and will continue to be a leader in homeless services due to our great partnerships with the community and non-profits. We are committed to leading with services to help those experiencing homelessness find long term solutions. The rise in unsheltered individuals is not just a Phoenix problem, but a regional problem. We will continue efforts to lead with services and be good neighbors to resolve this issue. Not place the burden on any one city.”

6/23/2018 12:20:00 AMNick Valenzuela602-495-5405
